What are the benefits of cycle-specific insurance?

Find out what the benefits are for getting cycle-specific insurance before setting off on your motorhome or campervan holiday, as explained by the bike experts at Bikmo.

Many people don’t realise that their home insurance cover does not necessarily give them the cover they need. From exclusions whilst riding through to not being covered away from home, it’s worth checking so you do not get caught out.

We have partnered with the bike experts at Bikmo to offer our members cycle-specific insurance, as they have enhanced their cover* specifically with motorhome and campervan owners’ needs in mind.

Here are Bikmo's top five factors to take into account when buying cycling-specific insurance:

1) Is your bicycle insured when you’re not at home?

Some home insurance policies do not cover accidental damage or theft to your bike whilst away from home which is probably when you need it most.

Bikmo offers 365 day worldwide cover as standard plus your bikes are covered^ when left in locked motorhomes or campervans and when locked to a secure bike rack mounted on motorhomes or campervans provided that you follow Bikmo's locking specifications.

2) Maximum bike value

The value of cycles is typically subject to a cap under home contents insurance, which may be as low as £500. The good news is that Bikmo covers bikes, including e-bikes, up to £30,000 in value.

3) What excess do you have?

It can be frustrating to have to pay towards a claim if you do need to make one. With Bikmo you may not need to pay anything if your claim results in a replacement bike acquired through their network, which includes a number of small independent retailers as well as large online retailers. Otherwise the excess is just 10% of the claim value subject to a minimum of £40.

4) If you make a claim, will you pay more next year?

Will your premiums increase, if your bicycle is stolen?
Making a claim on your household policy can sometimes result in higher premiums. If you need to make a claim on your Bikmo bicycle insurance, your premium won’t increase.

5) Making a claim on this insurance

Even the most competent of cyclists can experience bad luck, whether it is a sneaky pothole or a determined thief. In the event of a claim, Bikmo can repair or replace your bike, clothing and/or accessories. They also settle claims on a new-for-old basis, so if your bike's replacement cost has increased due to inflation this can be covered up to your chosen insured value.
